India to develop low cost Expendable Air launched Decoy to overwhelm enemy air defenses

India’s public sector defence companies are exploring the development of a low-cost expendable air launch decoy that will mimic the flight profiles and signatures of Indian Air Force fighter jets within enemy airspace.

The DRDO labs will spearhead this program and the focus will be on developing a subsonic unmanned system that will fly pre-programmed missions to overwhelm the integrated air defense systems of the enemy, forcing them to engage the decoys first due to their proximity that will reveal the location of the enemy’s air defense systems and will enhance the survivability and effectiveness of manned fighter jets during combat operations.

Use of decoys to saturate enemy air defense before the actual usage of combat aircraft is a widely used practice by many Air Forces around the world especially the powerful Air Forces around the world as this increases the survivability of the actual fighter jets in a heavily contested airspace and exposes enemy air defence locations as well.
