Indian Navy Kalvari class submarines to be equipped with torpedo-launched BrahMos-NG SLCM

The Indian Navy has made a significant decision to equip its six advanced Kalvari class submarines with Supersonic Torpedo Tube-Launched BrahMos NG (Next Generation) Submarine-Launched Cruise Missiles (SLCMs). BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India and Russia, has commenced the development of the BrahMos NG, a 1.3-ton missile that can be launched from various platforms, including fighter jets in the Indian Air Force fleet. Furthermore, its size and design allow for compatibility with the torpedo tubes on submarines, similar to the SM.39 Exocet anti-ship missiles already in the submarine arsenal.

BrahMos Aerospace is undertaking the development of the BrahMos NG cruise missile to enable its launch from the horizontal torpedo tubes on submarines. During the launch, a Submarine Horizontal Launch BrahMos NG Capsule is ejected from the torpedo tube, carrying the missile.

Once safely released from the submarine, the rocket motor propels the BrahMos NG missile, allowing it to break through a forward tearing shell of the Capsule. Subsequently, the BrahMos NG missile and the Capsule separate, with the Capsule sinking away from the submarine while the missile rises to the surface and transitions into cruise mode.

The integration of BrahMos NG SLCMs into the Kalvari class submarines also strengthens India’s defense preparedness in the Indian Ocean region. These submarines, renowned for their stealth features and advanced technologies, are already equipped with a range of sophisticated weaponry and sensors. The addition of the BrahMos NG SLCMs further enhances their offensive capabilities, providing the Navy with a potent maritime deterrent and the ability to conduct covert operations effectively.
