Is India advancing towards the ultimate Aerospace Triumph of having its own jet engine? Kaveri 2.0 is in the making !

Is India advancing towards the ultimate Aerospace Triumph of having its own jet engine? Why is this question arriving suddenly ? Because, in a historic stride towards the ultimate dream in the aerospace sector, the Defense Research and Development Organization’s (DRDO) engine development section, Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GRSE) is poised to receive the indigenous 48-kilonewton dry Kaveri engine manufactured by Godrej Aerospace. This dry Kaveri variant is set to undergo extensive ground trials in India before reaching its pinnacle at the final validation stage in Russia’s Gromov Flight Research Institute. The journey promises the completion of all tests and flight certification by the year 2025.

An integral aspect of this aerospace evolution is the engine’s role in powering India’s first Stealth Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV). The GTRE, in a strategic move, will conduct a limited technology demonstration on the LCA Tejas fighter. This will not only showcase the engine’s capabilities but also aim to secure additional funds from the Ministry of Defence for the development of an advanced afterburner module. This module, projected to generate an impressive 85-kilonewton thrust, is destined to position itself among the elite, rivaling the American General Electric F-404 engines currently propelling the Tejas Mark 1 and the upcoming Mark 1A Jets.

This technological advancement not only promises increased performance but also positions India as a formidable player in the global aerospace arena.

Should GTRE triumph in developing the Kaveri 2.0 with a thrust capacity of 83-85 kN or higher, it stands as a viable candidate to replace the current F-404 IN-20 engines on the LCA-Tejas Mk1A fleet. Considering the nearly 40-year lifespan of each LCA-Tejas Mk1A aircraft, a new engine becomes imperative approximately a decade post-induction into the Air Force.

Notably, the current Dry Kaveri is earmarked to power India’s inaugural stealth Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV) known as Ghatak. As the Dry Kaveri’s certification is slated for completion by 2025-26, limited demonstrations aboard first lot LCA-Tejas prototypes are poised to instill confidence, ensuring the sustained momentum of this ambitious program. The prospective success of the Kaveri 2.0 could signify a substantial leap in India’s indigenous aerospace capabilities.
