The Indian Navy is planning to procure 6 Next Generation Nuclear Attack Submarines under the rechristened Project-77 (formerly Project-75 Alpha) but as per the latest information, the Navy will get in-principal approval only for 3 such submarines initially, due to high procurement costs.
Project-77 (formerly Project-75 Alpha): India may reduce number of SSN to 3, from planned 6 initially
The Indian Navy is considering the French offer of developing an indigenous nuclear attack submarine (SSN) based on the French Barracuda class submarine design and there are also disagreements on funding the development of an indigenous 190 megawatt Pressurized Water Reactor which had completed the initial design in 2018 but no land-based prototype has been built for testing the design yet.
The Ministry of Defence under the supervision of Late Former Defence Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar, gave the approval to the Project-75 Alpha 6 SSN development program for the Indian Navy, but since then, no major development happened to the project.
