VL-SRSAM achieves unbelievable range and versatility; Comes close to the range of Barak-8 LR-SAM of the Indian Navy

In a comprehensive year-end review for 2023, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) of India has unveiled extraordinary advancements in the nation’s military capabilities. Within this array of accomplishments, the Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) emerges as a pivotal force, reshaping the landscape of India’s naval and air defense.

As a surface-to-air iteration stemming from the Astra MkI Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM), the VL-SRSAM has transcended expectations by boasting an impressive strike range of 80 kilometers. This exceeds initial predictions, which envisioned a range below 50 kilometers. The extended reach empowers the VL-SRSAM to effectively neutralize a diverse spectrum of aerial threats.

The extended range of the VL-SRSAM positions it close to the Indian Navy’s LR-SAM (Barak-8), currently boasting a maximum range of 100 kilometers. This development opens avenues for integrating the VL-SRSAM into upcoming small warships like the Next Generation Missile Vessels and Next Generation Corvettes. The VL-SRSAM, with its remarkable capabilities, can potentially serve as the primary SAM cover for these vessels.

Inheriting the formidable solid-propellant rocket motor and advanced seeker technology from its air-to-air counterpart, the VL-SRSAM guarantees unmatched accuracy and lethality. The integration of larger fins, possibly adapted from the QRSAM, enhances the missile’s maneuverability and targeting precision. Additionally, the VL-SRSAM features a thrust vectoring control system, further solidifying its technological prowess.

Tailored primarily for the Indian Navy, the VL-SRSAM is poised to deliver augmented close-range protection for frontline warships. Its strategic role includes replacing the currently employed Israeli-supplied Barak-I Point Defence Missile system, and introducing a more potent and domestically developed alternative.

The versatility of the VL-SRSAM extends beyond naval applications, with the MoD envisioning a ground-based air defense system variant designed specifically for the Indian Air Force. This strategic move aims to fortify India’s terrestrial air defense capabilities, offering crucial protection against aerial threats across diverse environments.

In summary, the VL-SRSAM unfolds as a technological marvel, redefining India’s defense capabilities with its remarkable range and adaptability. The strategic positioning of this missile not only transforms naval defense but also opens new frontiers in bolstering India’s air defense capabilities.
