AMCA 5th Gen Stealth Fighter: Road Ahead for India's Next-Gen Fighter Development Program After CCS Approval

India’s AMCA program, led by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), has received a significant boost with government funding approval. This development is crucial for the future of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Government Funding Boosts AMCA Program

The government has approved a ?15,000 crore funding for the AMCA program, marking the beginning of a multi-phase development. The initial phase will focus on establishing a new assembly line for the AMCA, including the acquisition of machinery and materials needed for the assembly of the first few jets.

Aggressive Timeline for AMCA Development

ADA and HAL are working towards an aggressive timeline, aiming to conduct ground testing of the first AMCA prototype by early 2027. Flight trials are expected to begin in 2028, with one prototype manufactured per year. The final two prototypes will be near or pre-production ready, incorporating many production-standard components.

AMCA MkI Initial Operational Capability (IOC) and Production

The AMCA MkI Initial Operational Capability (IOC) is projected for early 2032, with production starting soon after. The IAF plans to procure 40 MkI units for extensive testing and operational doctrine development. These first two squadrons will push the aircraft to its limits, refining tactics and strategies for future pilots. Teething issues and other improvements will be sought and implemented to refine the MkII.

AMCA MkII: An Enhanced Variant

The AMCA MkII, an even more potent variant, is envisioned with a jointly developed engine with French firm SAFRAN. Production of the MkII is expected to begin after 2035, with orders exceeding 100 units in the first phase. The MkII will replace Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets from 2040 onwards when older Su-30MKI aircraft are nearly 40 years old.

Significance of the AMCA Program

The AMCA program marks a significant stride for India’s self-reliance in fighter jet development. With dedicated funding and a clear roadmap, the IAF is set to receive a game-changing domestic fighter jet in the coming decade.
