India’s Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), has completed the delivery of 15 Limited Series Production (LSP) units to the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Army Aviation (AAC). These helicopters are undergoing extensive evaluation before HAL can secure a major production contract.

Integration of Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs)

HAL is working to integrate Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs) and incorporate user-suggested minor modifications to enhance the firepower of the LCH Prachand. The goal is to acquire a contract for 145 LCH units from both the IAF and AAC.

Strategic Deployment

The IAF and AAC have strategically deployed their LSP variants of the LCH Prachand. The IAF’s helicopters are stationed near the Indo-Pakistani border in Jodhpur, while the AAC utilizes them just 250 km from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Missamari, Assam.

Future Enhancements

HAL is exploring additional capabilities for the LCH Prachand, including:

  • Tube-launched Loitering Munitions: Integrating precision attack systems for enhanced offensive capabilities.
  • 20mm Cannon Turret: Integrating a locally developed turret-mounted cannon system developed by ARDE for increased firepower.
  • Air-to-Air Variant of VSHORADS: Developing an air-to-air Very Short-Range Air Defence System Variant for comprehensive self-defence.

Significance of LCH Prachand

The LCH Prachand represents a significant milestone in India’s indigenous development of advanced attack helicopters. The successful integration of proposed enhancements and the securing of a major production contract will be crucial for the program’s advancement.
