The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is embarking on a strategic initiative to meet the surging demand for the LCA-Tejas Mk1A fighter jet by intensifying the production of the cutting-edge Uttam AESA Fire Control Radar (FCR). Developed by DRDO’s Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), this radar is poised to replace the existing Israeli ELM-2052 AESA radar utilized on the LCA-Tejas Mk1A.

As we navigate through the aerospace landscape, the production trajectory of the LCA-Tejas Mk1A is slated to experience a substantial acceleration from 2025 onward. This surge in production naturally triggers an increased demand for the Uttam AESA FCR. Notably, a private manufacturing firm involved in the radar’s production anticipates orders exceeding 40 units, underscoring the radar’s significance in contemporary aviation technology.

The initial batches of 40 LCA-Tejas Mk1A fighter jets will sport the HAL-supplied ELM-2052 AESA radar. However, subsequent productions are set to witness a technological transition, with the Uttam AESA FCR taking center stage. This transition is scheduled to commence after the completion of the first 40 Tejas Mk1A fighter jets, starting from the fiscal year 2026-27.

Looking ahead, the Uttam AESA FCR is earmarked to be the exclusive radar for all 97 LCA-Tejas Mk1A fighter jets that the Indian Air Force (IAF) is poised to procure from HAL. Beyond this, the radar is also being considered for an extensive upgrade program for the existing Tejas Mk1 fighter jets, solidifying its pivotal role in the Indian defense aviation landscape.

The Uttam AESA FCR boasts several notable advantages over its predecessor, the ELM-2052 AESA radar. These enhancements include a superior detection range, enhanced tracking accuracy, and advanced electronic warfare capabilities. Furthermore, the radar’s design emphasizes compactness and lightweight attributes, aligning seamlessly with the integration requirements of the LCA-Tejas aircraft.

In conclusion, DRDO’s decision to ramp up the production of the Uttam AESA FCR signifies a landmark leap in India’s indigenous defense capabilities. The radar’s cutting-edge technology, coupled with its anticipated roles in the LCA-Tejas Mk1A and potential upgrades for existing Tejas Mk1, positions it as a cornerstone in shaping the future of Indian defense aviation.
