DRDO Chief reveals that Rudram-2 has already been tested
DRDO has successfully conducted trials of the Mach 5.5 capable Rudram-2 advanced air-to-surface missile that has been designed to be launched from Sukhoi Su-30 and Mirage 2000. In a conversation to local media named Focus News, DRDO Chief Dr. Samir V. Kamat revealed that successful trials of both Rudram-1 and Rudram-2 has already been conducted.
Rudram-2 has a strike range of 300 kilometers and it comes in two variants the first variant is designed to neutralize enemy radar installations with utmost accuracy while the second variant is designed to target airstrips, bunkers and aircraft hangars.

In November 2022, ANI has reported that the Indian Air Force has moved a proposal worth over Rs 1,400 crore to the government for acquiring Rudram next-generation anti-radiation missiles (NGARM) to search and destroy enemy radar locations.
NGARM/Rudram-I
NGARM or Rudram-I is India’s first indigenously developed anti-radiation missile that has a speed of Mach two and be launched from an altitude of 500m to 15km with a maximum operational range of 200km. The missile weighs around 600kg with warhead of 60kg. It uses pre-fragmented warhead with optical proximity fuze and is powered by a dual-pulsed solid rocket motor.
The missile features dual seeker system comprising of passive homing head and Millimetre wave active seeker. The primary guidance system of Rudram-1 is an on-board passive homing head (PHH) which provides mid-course guidance. The PHH is capable of detecting a radio frequency emission from 100km away. Its accuracy is further improved with the help of INS-GPS navigation. The MMW seeker is used for end game or terminal phase guidance. The MMW seeker will ensure that even though the radar is turned off or moved away, it is located and destroyed. It also enables the missile to discriminate between an actual target and decoy.
The missile also features 2-way datalink and capable of lock-on before launch and lock-on after launch modes. The Sukhoi Su-30MKI is the primary platform for Rudram-1 and in future it will also be integrated with other fighter jets of IAF. The missile is expected to have a circular error probability of 5m.
DRDO’s commences the fabrication of Rudram-II
The Rudram-II is going to be a a hypersonic aero-ballistic air-to-ground missile under development by DRDO. The missile will have a solid rocket motor for propulsion, with a range of 50-300 km. The missile will have peak speed of 5.5 Mach i.e., Hypersonic.
Variants for Rudram-II
The missile will have two variants for different roles and off-course different seeker for different roles. The two roles are ARM i.e as Anti-Radiation Missile and Ground Attack Roles.
When used as anti-radiation missile it features dual seeker with Passive Homing Head and an IIR seeker which makes it jam proof and enhances the accuracy of attack. While Passive Homing head enables the missile to track the source radiating the radio waves such SAM, FCR & Surveillance radar, the IIR seeker would assist to differentiate between a decoy and actual target.
In ARM role the warhead used is pre-fragmented one with weight close to 155 kg. Its angle of attack will be between 40-50 degrees.
In ground attack mode the missile, will feature only IIR seeker. It will have Penetration Cum Blast warhead of 200 kg. Its impact angle will be 80 degrees. The missile can be used to target Bunkers, airstrips and air hangers.
Both the variants are going to use INS and Satellite Navigation for the mid-course guidance. The warhead weight is reduced in the ARM role to make space for dual seeker. The missile resembles almost like Russian Kh-15 missile in terms of aerodynamic structure, role, warhead, seeker, flight path and range.
